It usually takes around six months to become a foster parent – however, in some cases, it can take around three to four months. The time it takes to become a foster carer is based on assessment process, and how long this takes to complete.

What affects the time it takes to become a foster carer?

There are other factors which could determine the length of time it takes to become a foster parent. These can include:

  • Completing your fostering training
  • Getting together the paperwork and evidence required for the application process
  • The variety of checks that will be conducted.

There will be a series of checks carried out on you to ensure your eligibility to become a foster carer – these include DBS checks, Social Services checks, medical assessments and home risk assessments.

Once all these checks are completed, the results and findings are given to an independent panel who will decide whether you are suitable to be a foster carer. However, Excel Fostering will have the final decision, whilst using the panel’s recommendations as a guide.
